What is the right amount of stretch to put on the tape?

Dynamic Tape is not a Kinesiology Tape, it’s a Biomechanical Tape. So taping like a Kinesiology Tape will achieve one of two things. #1 It won’t work. #2 You will hurt yourself or someone else. Dynamic Tape is applied in a shortened position. We will use a quadriceps taping as an example Quad Taping. The leg is taped in a fully extended position because as the person stands up and flexes the knee, the biomechanical properties of the tape will kick in. Knowing how much stretch to place at the start is very important.

Assuming you are using 2″ anchors for the Kinesiology tape, then the effective stretching range of tape is a total of 8″. If the tape is stretched a total of 4 inches, then this becomes a 50% stretch on the tape, as the anchors are not moving. Because the tape is applied in a lengthened position, it means that the MAXIMUM stretch at any given time will be 50%.

Dynamic Tape is a Biomechanical Taping, suggesting we are going to use the “bungee-like” qualities of the tape to create recoil to modify load, function, and movement patterns.

With Dynamic Tape we recommended large anchors, generally 4 finger widths (around 3 inches) because of the increased recoil, spreading out the pull across a large cross section of skin. Dynamic Tape 3 inch anchor

With 3″ anchors with the same 12″ piece of tape, the effective stretching range is now only 6″.

As the knee bends, the tape stretches around 3″ as the knee bends to 90 degrees. This means the tape will have an effective stretch of 4″ with a normal squat. Now the tape has stretched 66% more from its resting position. Dynamic Tape Stretched with Knee Bend

If we tape like Kinesiology Taping methods and apply a 4″ stretch at the start, the tape will then lengthen to 7″ and have a very high resting tension. Dynamic Tape overstretched

As you can see from these pictures, the tension on the anchors is too great and starts to cause narrowing of the tape.

How do I make a Powerband?

PowerbandA Powerband is created by laminating two pieces of Dynamic Tape together prior to placing on the body. Simply cut two strips of dynamic tape of equal size and lay one on top of the other with no stretch.

Can I make a power band with a 2”(5cm) and 3”(7.5cm) together?

It is generally recommended that the same sized tapes are used together. A power band example where a 2” and 3” are used together is relevant for taping for the Achilles Tendon / Plantar Flexors where a 2” strip is covered with a 3” tape to provide good sealing of the taping method while maximizing the mechanical effects of the tape.

This is an example where the 3″ strip can be placed over the 2″ power band and used correctly. It is not recommended to place a 2″ strip on top of an already stretched 2″ strip on the body.


When do I use a 2” versus a 3” wide tape?

The width of tape is determined by a few factors. First, larger body parts usually require more force (ex. – shoulder joint with throwing motion) so a 3” wide is more appropriate.

In contrast the fingers and wrist benefit more from the 2”. Which size tape you use is simply determined by what your goal and aim is. Powerbands offer increased force as well, combining two same width tapes together, laminated into a single piece that is double the strength.

Is Dynamic Tape latex-free?

Dynamic Tape is a latex-free product. While latex-free, a very small percentage (less than 1%) may have an allergy to the glue and will present itself as an allergic reaction of contact dermatitis. If you have known sensitivities to medical tapes or glues contact your physician before using this product. Reaction generally occur with 10-30 minutes of application and should be removed immediately. Was with soap and water, then contact your physician. Allergic Reaction

What type of glue is used in Dynamic Tape?

Dynamic Tape uses a heat activated medical acrylic that is common with many forms of sports and therapeutic taping. If you have a known allergy to medical adhesives please consult with your physician before using Dynamic Tape.

Are there any contraindications to using Dynamic Tape?

If you have damaged, frail, or sun-burnt skin it is not recommended to use Dynamic Tape. Anyone with known sensitivities to medical acrylics should contact their physician before using this product.

I developed some small blisters while using Dynamic Tape. Why did this happen?

The common form of skin irritation while using Dynamic Tape results from improper application. Allergic reactions to Dynamic Tape are experienced within 20-30 minutes and are present anywhere tape was in contact with skin.

Mechanical irritation, the result of:

  • Too much tension
  • Too small of anchors
  • Improper anchoring during stretching
  • Improper removal of tape

commonly presents as this, “spot specific” areas of blistering but not over the entirety of the tape.

Are there areas I should not put Dynamic Tape?

Generally speaking any open wounds or sensitive areas (eyes, eye lids, axilla (arm pits), genitals, and anus are not places dynamic tape should be used in or around. Dynamic tape is intended to absorb load through the tape but if the anchoring spot is too sensitive tape should not be used. Also, care should be used if there is a lack or diminished sensation. This is common with neurological conditions, nerve damage, or numbness caused by diabetes. If you present with any numbness we strongly recommended consulting your doctor before using this product as irritation or damage to the skin could result from excessive tension using the tape without appropriate pain feedback to warn of danger.

How should I prepare the skin before using Dynamic Tape?

Clean with soap and water and allow to completely dry before applying Dynamic Tape. If areas have hair, trim with electric clippers. Not generally recommended to use a razor as that causes skin irritation prior to use of product. Alcohol is a solvent which can make the glue less effective unless completely dry so if using alcohol on the skin to remove soap/oils be sure the skin is completely dry before applying Dynamic Tape.

What do I do if there is itching and irritation with using the tape?

Remove the tape immediately, gently clean the skin with soap and water to remove any irritants, and contact your physician. While Dynamic Tape, similar to many other elastic tapes with a medical adhesive, is very safe and effective to use a small portion of the population has a natural sensitivity to these products. If you have had previous sensitivity to taping speak with your doctor before using this product. If a reaction occurs, please discontinue use of this product.

Can I use Dynamic Tape and Kinesiology Tape together?

Dynamic Tape, the original Biomechanical Tape, is that….a Biomechanical Tape. The purpose of the tape is fundamentally different than that of kinesiology tapes. As the tape has different properties and the taping methods are different we do not recommend using a combination of tapings over the same body part. The intent of Dynamic Tape is to reduce and control load while Kinesiology tapes are to lift the skin to affect pain sensation and lymph. We are not a Kinesiology taping company so we will not make an statement with respects to other products. We would rather focus on the benefits of our own tape and methodologies.

Do I need to be certified to use Dynamic Tape?

No, but it is highly recommended to ensure the tape is used correctly for maximal benefit and minimize risks associated with improper application techniques. Please consult with your physician or a local licensed professional who has attended a Dynamic Tape certification course if you have any questions. If you are a medical provider with experience with kinesiology tape, we highly recommend you attend our live 1-day, 8 hour CEU course as our product is fundamentally different that other tapes, thus, requiring training specific to using the product effectively.

There are little lines left after I take off the tape, is that common?

The striations in the tape have been shown to, on occasion, leave an impression on the skin that looks like fine lines. Commonly these resolve within a day or two but there have been reports of this lasting for weeks. There is no damage to the skin, it is merely a superficial presentation that will go away with time.

How long can Dynamic Tape be worn for?

Dynamic Tape generally lasts for 5 days. In some cases where there are hot, humid environments or swimming in chlorinated water for extended periods of time, the tape may not last that long, but when applied correctly can commonly last for 5 days assuming no allergic reactions or skin sensitivities.

Can Dynamic Tape get wet and still be effective?

Yes. Dynamic Tape, when applied correctly, is able to withstand water exposure for extended periods. Tape generally lasts 5 days before working its way off on its own. Swimming in chlorinated water, soaking in hot tubs, or spending hours in the shower, will test the effectiveness of this product. If applied correctly Dynamic Tape will last through multiple showers and going to the pool a few times but it isn’t perfect. Swim two hours a day and it likely will only last 2-3 days.

What is the shelf life of Dynamic Tape?

Every roll of Dynamic Tape has an expiration tape. From time of manufacturing the tape is considered good for 2 years.

Can I re-use strips of Dynamic Tape?

No, it’s a 1x use.

The tape isn’t sticking well, what should I do?

First, make sure that you are applying the tape correctly. Safe Application and Removal of Dynamic Tape Next, determine if there are any other factors confounding application including dry/flakey skin, lotions, hair, wet/sweaty skin, high humidity. Dynamic Tape should be stored in a cool, dry environment. Leaving the tape in a hot trunk or baking out in the sun for days can potentially affect its ability to stick to the skin.

My knees hurt because of arthritis. Does Dynamic Tape help?

Yes, Dynamic Tape provides benefits to unload force through soft tissue, including muscles and tendons, but does not have an effect on reducing compression within the joint. Arthritis is a progressive condition and Dynamic Tape will not help restore damaged tissue. Muscles that have been weakened by years of pain would have potential benefit from Dynamic Tape to assist with walking, taking advantage of the strong elastic recoil. We haven’t created a cure for arthritis but perhaps something to make walking a little better.

Will Dynamic Tape make me a better athlete?

Sorry, but the answer is no. Athletic performance is the result of a complex arrangement of things, one of which is not tape. Dynamic Tape firmly believes that our load absorbing, elastic recoiling product can provide athletes that are suffering from previous or current injuries, significant fatigue, or breakdown in body mechanics the ability to compete more effectively. But this does not mean that Dynamic Tape, or any taping product for that matter, will make an athlete run faster, jumper higher, or score more points. That burden is solely on the athlete. Dynamic Tape is happy to be part of the sports environment but just don’t look to use to win gold with the high jump.

So since Dynamic Tape is a Biomechanical Tape and not a Kinesiology Tape it wouldn’t be a benefit to use it with pain or swelling?
